A brief screening to better understand how chronic pain may be affecting your emotional well-being

Living with ongoing pain can affect much more than the body. It can interfere with sleep, work, relationships, concentration, and everyday activities. Over time, pain may also contribute to anxiety, sadness, frustration, or emotional exhaustion.

This does not mean that the pain is imaginary or “all in your head.” Pain is a real and complex experience, and physical pain and emotional well-being often affect one another. Understanding both can help create a more complete plan for care.

The Psychological Wellness Clinic now offers the P-3 Pain Patient Profile, a brief screening designed to help identify emotional distress that may be associated with chronic or recurring pain.

What does the P-3 measure?

The P-3 is a standardized questionnaire that generally takes about 12 to 15 minutes to complete. It looks at three areas that can be affected by ongoing pain:

  • Depression, including sadness, discouragement, and loss of motivation
  • Anxiety, including worry, fear, tension, and difficulty relaxing
  • Somatic concerns, meaning physical symptoms and bodily distress

What can the results tell me?

The results can help you better understand how pain may be affecting your mood and daily life. They may also help identify concerns that deserve additional support and provide a starting point for conversations with your therapist, primary care provider, or pain specialist.

The P-3 is a screening tool, not a complete medical or psychological evaluation. It cannot diagnose the physical cause of pain or independently diagnose a mental health condition. A higher score does not mean that symptoms are invented or exaggerated.

What does the appointment include?

The Chronic Pain & Emotional Health Screening is completed during a single 30-minute virtual appointment with one of our therapists. During this session, you will:

  • Complete the P-3 questionnaire
  • Have your responses professionally scored and reviewed
  • Discuss your results and any recommended next steps with the therapist

You will also receive a brief written summary of your results and recommendations following the appointment.

You do not need to be a current therapy patient or have a mental health diagnosis to request a screening.

Interested in scheduling a P-3 screening?

If you would like an appointment with one of our therapists to complete the P-3, please fill out the appointment-request form below. A member of our team will review your information and contact you about the next steps.

How much does the screening cost?

For private-pay patients, the cost of the Chronic Pain & Emotional Health Screening is $125.

For patients with commercial health insurance, the amount you pay will depend on your individual plan, including applicable copays, coinsurance, deductibles, and coverage requirements.

At this time, we are unable to offer this screening to patients with Medicare or Medicaid.

The P-3 is not intended for emergencies and does not replace medical care. Call 911 for sudden or severe new pain or another medical emergency. If you are experiencing a mental health or suicide crisis, call or text 988
